Olympic Stadium - Hello, Our Stadium 国立競技場

The new Olympic Stadium in Tokyo was completed in Nov. 2019 and an opening event for the public called "Hello, Our Stadium" was held on Dec. 21, 2019. This was the first time the public could enter and see the spanking new Olympic Stadium. A three-hour evening showcase of culture (Tohoku festivals), music (J-pop groups), and sports (relay race by track stars). Tickets ranged from ¥8,000 to ¥5,000 (sold by lottery).

Emperor's Cup JFA 99th Japan Football Championship 天皇杯 JFA第99回全日本サッカー選手権大会

On New Year's Day 2020, the Emperor's Cup JFA All-Japan Soccer Championship final game was held. Vissel Kobe vs. Kashima Antlers. This is the first sports event to be held in the new Olympic Stadium (National Stadium).

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden 新宿御苑

If you look at any map of central Tokyo, you'll see that Shinjuku Gyoen is one big blotch of green. This huge urban oasis delights you with something blooming every month, especially the cherry blossoms in late March to early April. Open 9 am to 4 pm, closed Mon. except in late March till April 24 and Nov. 1-15 when it is open every day. Admission 200 yen for adults.

Kagurazaka Awa Odori Dance 神楽坂阿波踊り

The 37th Kagurazaka Awa Odori Dance was held during July 25-26, 2008 from 7 pm to 9 pm. These pictures were taken on the 25th. About 15 dance troupes danced along the main Kagurazaka-dori road. The dance is actually the climax of the annual Kagurazaka Matsuri Festival. Also see my YouTube video here.

Shinjuku Eisa Matsuri 新宿エイサーまつり

In late July, the east side of Shinjuku Station becomes like Okinawa for a day with many Okinawans performing the Eisa taiko drumming dance which is like a Bon dance. Photos were taken on July 30, 2005. Also see the video at YouTube.

Sotobori Canal 外濠

Formerly a moat of Edo Castle, this canal stretching from Iidabashi Station to Ichigaya Station along the Chuo Line is noted for cherry blossoms. Also see my YouTube video here.
