Ashikaga Flower Park あしかがフラワーパーク

Ashikaga Flower Park is insanely awesome for its massive and numerous wisteria trees that bloom from late April to mid-May. It also has colorful azaleas and rhododendron. Very pleasant and eye-popping flower park which must be one of Japan's grandest for wisteria. Opened in April 1997. Admission during wisteria season is most expensive at 1,700 yen. The park can be reached from Ashikaga-shi Station on the Tobu Isezaki Line or JR Tomita Station on the Ryomo Line. Shuttle buses run from Ashikaga-shi Station every day during the wisteria season, otherwise, it runs only on weekends.

Nikko Toshogu Grand Spring Festival 東照宮春季大祭

Also called "Sennin Gyoretsu" (1,000-person Procession 千人行列), this is Nikko's largest festival held on May 17-18. The highlight is a long procession of over 1,000 people dressed in various costumes and three portable shrines dedicated to the spirits of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Minamoto Yoritomo. These pictures were taken during the two times I saw this festival. Also see the video at YouTube.

Nikko Toshogu Shrine 東照宮

A National Treasure and World Heritage Site, Nikko's magnificent shrines and temples overshadow any other attractions Tochigi has. The Toshogu Shrine is especially famous and also serves as Tokugawa Ieyasu's mausoleum.

Kinugawa Onsen Hot Spring 鬼怒川温泉

Hot spring resort along Kinugawa River. The thing about Kinugawa Onsen is that it's on the Tobu Line (from Asakusa), not JR, so people with JR Railpasses need to pay extra for the train. Also, it's slightly further north from Nikko's famous Toshogu Shrine that everyone visits. Not very convenient, and so they are trying to develop strategies to attract more tourists

Edo Wonderland 日光江戸村

Edo Wonderland, called "Nikko Edomura" in Japanese, is a theme park featuring Edo Period (1603–1867) architecture and culture. Edo was the former name of Tokyo where the shogun ruled Japan. So the park has many samurai elements and costumed people wearing topknots or geisha hairstyles.
The park is pretty big with many attractions (theaters and hands-on activities), full-scale traditional buildings, gift shops, and eateries. Visitors can also rent kimono and walk around the park for photos.
The park gives people staying at nearby Kinugawa Onsen hot spring something to do during the day.
To get to Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura, take a bus from Kinugawa Onsen Station (bus stop 3). Buses run three times an hour from 9 am to 3:50 pm.
