tm150-20100228_3325.jpg
The annual and 4th Tokyo Marathon was held on Feb. 28 2010 starting at 9:10 am for the runners in Shinjuku. A whopping 300,000 people applied to enter, but only 32,000 runners got in. They paid 10,000 yen each.
tm151-20100228_2540.jpg
I stayed at the finish line the whole day, just to see what they do here. Here's the 2010 Tokyo Marathon winner FUJIWARA Masakazu (#102) heading for the finish line.
tm152-20100228_2548.jpg
He is the first Japanese national to win the Tokyo Marathon. He'll also be 8 million yen richer as he collects the 1st place award money. He clocked in at 2 hr. 12 min. 19 sec. (Course record is 2:07:23)
tm153-20100228_2553.jpg
Fujiwara speeds to the finish line with no one else to challenge him. You can see two kimono-clad girls holding up the finish line tape.
tm154-20100228_2558.jpg
Coming in 2nd is FUJIWARA Arata (#12), 3rd is SATOH Atsushi (#11), and 4th place is KAWAUCHI Yuki (#117). All men. They will claim 4 million, 2 million, and 1 million yen in prize money respectively.
tm155-20100228_2563.jpg
Fifth place is ADACHI Tomoya (#18) for 750,000 yen in prize money.
tm156-20100228_2569.jpg
Finally, a foreign runner. This is Joseph Muwaniki (#146) the first foreigner to cross the finish line to come in 6th place to claim 500,000 yen in prize money. He lives in Tokyo and sponsored by a camera company.
tm157-20100228_2571.jpg
In 7th place at Tokyo Marathon 2010 is Rachid Kisri (#1) of Morocco. His paycheck will be 400,000 yen.
tm158-20100228_2574.jpg
Eighth place is KODA Takaaki (#143). He takes home 300,000 yen.
tm159-20100228_2579.jpg
Ninth place is Salim Kipsang (#3) who was last year's Tokyo Marathon winner. This Kenyan probably wasn't used to the freezing cold and rain (or slushy snow). He receives 200,000 yen.
tm160-20100228_2584.jpg
In 10th place and the last male runner to receive prize money is HASEGAWA Kiyokatsu (#149). He will receive a paltry 100,000 yen for his 2 hr. 15 min. 15-sec. run.
tm161-20100228_2587.jpg
The clock shows the elapsed marathon time and the time behind the winner. See the names of the top 70 runners here.
tm162-20100228_2598.jpg
As this runner indicates, it was a freezing-cold day. It rained all morning and we even had slushy snow at one point. But it wasn't so windy nor stormy.
tm163-20100228_2599.jpg
Prior to the runners' marathon. A wheelchair marathon was held for 25 entrants. They started 5 min. before the runners. The wheelchair winner receives 200,000 yen.
tm164-20100228_2611.jpg
Finally a woman. This is Alevtina Biktimirova, a Russian who was the first woman runner to cross the finish line and claim 8 million yen in prize money for Tokyo Marathon 2010.
tm165-20100228_2613.jpg
Alevtina heads for the finish as she passes by some cheerleaders. The prize money for women is the same as for men. The top three women runners were all foreigners. Five of the top ten women were foreigners.

Now for the costume party, my favorite part of the marathon, to get a lotta good laughs. This is a salaryman.
tm171-20100228_2663.jpg
tm172-20100228_2670.jpg
Many men cross-dressed. Many of them were middle-aged even.

tm177-20100228_2706.jpg
I saw a few honeybee costumes.
tm178-20100228_2707.jpg
Spectator stands near the finish line filled up in the afternoon. Strange that there was hardly anyone in the stands when the marathon winner passed by. But then, it was cold and raining.

Tiger costumes were popular since 2010 is the year of the tiger.
tm195-20100228_2758.jpg

tm292-20100228_3147.jpg
tm293-20100228_3150.jpg

tm309-20100228_3245.jpg
