One of Tokyo's crown jewels for tourism, the ever-popular Asakusa district still retains the old-style atmosphere of Tokyo. It is blessed with Tokyo's most famous temple, major festivals, and convenient publicc transportation. Asakusa Station is the nearest subway station on the Ginza and Toei Asakusa Lines. Sumida Park 隅田公園

Along Sumida River near Asakusa is Sumida Park. Most famous for cherry blossoms and a great view of Tokyo Sky Tree. The cherries are also lit up at night. It is not as crowded as Ueno Park. Sumida Park also extends across the river in Sumida Ward with another row of cherries along the river.

Ueno Park and Shinobazu Pond 上野公園・不忍池

Ueno Park is one of Japan's most famous parks. Especially famous for cherry blossoms and national museums. Adjacent Shinobazu Pond is also scenic with cherry blossoms and lotus.

Kappabashi Matsuri かっぱ橋道具まつり

Kappabashi is a road lined with kitchenware shops for restaurants and professional cooks. Tourists are also welcome. They love the fake food which can be bought (and made). In Oct., it holds the Kappabashi Dogu Matsuri festival. Near Tawaramachi Station on the Ginza Line.

Waseda-Keio Sokei Regatta 早慶レガッタ

In mid-April, longtime rivals Waseda University and Keio University hold their annual Sokei Regatta or Waseda-Keio Regatta, Japan's most famous collegiate rival regatta, similar to Oxford vs. Cambridge (The Boat Race) in the UK. They row on Sumida River with the finish line near Sakura Bridge near Asakusa. These photos were taken on April 14, 2019.

Asakusabashi 浅草橋

Asakusabashi has many Japanese doll shops. They are especially busy in March for Girl's Day. In 2014, a shop called Kyugetsu created a special pair of dolls depicting Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy.

Asakusa Butsudan-dori Buddhist Altar Road 浅草仏壇通り

Asakusa Butsudan-dori is a road between Tawaramachi Station (Ginza Line) and Ueno Station lined with many shops selling butsudan (household Buddhist altar) and household Shinto altars (kamidana). It is perpendicular to the Kappabashi kitchenware road.

Yanaka Cemetery 谷中霊園

Yanaka Cemetery (Yanaka Reien in Japanese) is one of Tokyo's major cemeteries where fifteen Tokugawa shoguns (including Yoshinobu, the last shogun), some daimyos, and famous people are buried. It is also famous for cherry blossoms along the main drag in the middle of the cemetery. Near JR Nippori Station.

The 28th Asakusa Samba Carnival was held on Aug. 30, 2008. Despite the heavy rains that fell at the halfway through, the show went on and most people stayed to watch.

The 26th Asakusa Samba Carnival was held on Aug. 26, 2006. Some 4,500 members from 33 troupes paraded from 1:30 pm to 6 pm. About 500,000 people were on hand to watch.
