This new Ishigaki Airport opened in March 2013. Due to the Yaeyama islands becoming a popular tourist destination, there were calls to built a bigger airport since 1979.11 views

It took years to decide where to build the new airport. One disturbing plan was to reclaim part of Shiraho coral reef.
