To Yagiri no Watashi

The boats operate on weekends. Fare is 100 yen one way.

This form of public transportation dates back to the Edo Period when there were 14 locations in Tokyo where such boats operated. Only this one now remains. Boarding the Yagiri Watashi boat. 矢切の渡し

Yagiri no Watashi boat crossing. After the two-minute river crossing, you will be in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture. You can then tour various temples and parks in Matsudo and neighboring Ichikawa on foot. There are signs along the way to guide you.

Don't ride the ferris wheel if you're afraid of heights. It is very high and the wind blows through.

The spacious park is an oasis. Lots of greenery, a beach, bicycling roads, birdwatching stations, and an aquarium.

Gyosen Park consists of the Heisei Garden and Shizen Zoo. Nice pocket of greenery and cute animals including a petting zoo. Free admission, near Kasai Station on the Tozai subway line. Park entrance.

Edogawa Heisei Garden was built in 1989, the first year of the Heisei Period. It occupies the northern part of Gyosen Park.

Gyosen Park was donated to Tokyo in 1933 by a local politician whose had a business named "Gyosen." In 1950, Edogawa Ward took over the park's management. In 1983, a small zoo opened.

In late March or early April, the park has some cherry blossoms.

Gyosen Park also has a small zoo. Open 10 am - 4:30 pm (Open 9:30 am on weekends and national holidays, closed at 4 pm from Nov. to Feb.). Closed on Mon. (open if a national holiday).

Needless to say, the subway/trains stations were jammed with people by 5 pm. This is when I got off the train at Shinozaki Station on the Toei Shinjuku subway line on Aug.1, 2009.

Still in Shinozaki Station heading for the exit. Koiwa Station on the JR Sobu Line must also have been crowded.

After getting to the top of the riverbank, this is the spectacle I came to see and photograph.

Some 900,000 of humanity gathered here for the Edogawa-ku Fireworks in Aug.

It was a lot more crowded than the last time I saw these fireworks years ago.

The Edogawa Ward Fireworks display is one of Tokyo's largest with a massive attendance of 900,000 people in both Edogawa Ward and neighboring Ichikawa city in Chiba. .

People are spread out along the riverbank of Edogawa River. Held on the first Sat. of Aug. at 7:15 pm to 8:25 pm. If weather is bad, it is held on the next day

The fireworks started exactly at 7:15 pm.

Mt. Fuji

I'm definitely not a good fireworks photographer. To avoid the crowds, I left the scene about 30 min. before the fireworks ended.

Back at Shinozaki Station, it was quite quick to get on a train. "Keep walking slowly and do not stop."

I shuddered to think how crowded the station would become in about 30-40 min.

Right in front of Funabori Station on the Toei Shinjuku subway line is this tall tower with a view. It's part of the Tower Hall Funabori building. It's a banquet hall and convention center. タワーホール船堀

Funabori Tower is 103 meters high and has free admission. The lookout deck has picture windows on all four sides. Take the elevator, open 9 amto 9:30 pm. May be closed in case of high winds.

From Satomi Park, the remaining walk went along Edogawa River to the train station.

Edogawa River has a nice riverside walking/cycling path on both sides of the river.

This is part of the riverside walking path. On the left is a forest on a hill. The forest is also being protected.

Edogawa River has a nice walking/cycling path.

Instead of going to Konodai Station on the Keisei Line, we walked further south along the Edogawa River. Keisei Line's bridge can be seen behind us.

This was where people crossed the river by boat and it was a busy/important artery. The Ichikawa Sekisho Checkpoint was at the border between Shimosa (Chiba) and Musashino (Tokyo) Provinces. So the Sekisho was the border control. 市川関所跡

Route 14 bridge over Edogawa River. Bridges were not built over Edogawa River until after the Edo Period ended. Until then, shuttle boats were used to shuttle travelers across the river.

JR Koiwa Station has this statue of Yokozuna Tochinishiki, a famous sumo wrestler who was from Koiwa.
