Yanmar Museum opened in March 2013 to mark the company's centennial. See Yanmar diesel engines, rice-farming tractors, and the life of founder Yamaoka Magokichi. English explanations also provided. MAP

Yanmar Museum is open 10:00 am to 6:00 pm (enter by 5 pm), Closed: Mondays (or Tuesday if the Monday is a national holiday) and from December 29 to January 3.

The museum is a 10-min. walk from JR Nagahama Station. On weekends and national holidays, there's shuttle bus from Nagahama Station. Museum admission for adults is 600 yen. Half price for kids.

Yamaoka Magokichi (1888-1962) 山岡孫吉, founder of Yanmar Diesel, Co. In 1933, he developed the world's first compact diesel engine.

Native of Takatsuki in northern Nagahama. At age 24, Yamaoka Magokichi established Yamaoka Hatsudoki Seisakusho 山岡発動機工作所, the forerunner of Yanmar Diesel Co., now called Yanmar Co.

One exhibition room (free admission) is dedicated to Yanmar founder Yamaoka Magokichi. Everything is in both Japanese and English. Excellent!

Yamaoka Magokichi was awarded the Order of Merit from Germany.

Yamaoka Magokichi was awarded this ring from Augburg, Germany, making him an honorary citizen. Yamaoka had built a stone monument for Rudolf Diesel in Augsburg, a sister city of Nagahama.

This was the most fun thing. It's a Hydraulic excavator that you can operate.
|

Use the levers to bring the shovel down/up or swivel it left/right and to scoop up or release the little balls.

The corporate name "Yanmar" was named after the oni-yanmar (オニヤンマ) Golden-ringed dragonfly in 1921. The largest dragonfly native to Japan. Chosen because it is a sign of plentiful harvests.
