The shrine worships Sugawara-no-Michizane, the god of learning and scholarship. So many students come and pray here to pass school entrance exams. The torch festival marks the anniversary of Michizane's death on March 25. All Tenjin and Tenmangu shrines are dedicated to Michizane.
