It started with the Kanto Festival from Akita Prefecture (same place where the Akita dog comes from). 
On both ends of the field, men in happi coats balanced tall paper lantern-bedecked bamboo poles, called kanto, on their shoulders, hand palms, or hips. These kanto symbolize rice plants.
