Municipal Mergers

On Apr. 30, 2001, Saitama had 43 cities (-shi; 市), 38 towns (-machi; 町), and 11 villages (-mura; 村). By March 31, 2006, this changed to 40 cities, 30 towns, and 1 village. Heisei Municipal Mergers between April 1, 1999 and March 31, 2006 are as follows:
