On March 31, 2002, Okinawa had 10 cities (-shi; 市), 16 towns (-cho; 町), and 27 villages (-mura; 村). By March 31, 2006, this changed to 11 cities, 11 towns, and 19 villages. Heisei Municipal Mergers between April 1, 1999 and March 31, 2006 are as follows:
