As of March 31, 2006, Ishikawa has cc cities (-shi; 市), tt towns (-cho; 町), and vv villages (-mura; 村).

Cities

The major cities are Kanazawa (capital), Nanao, and Wajima. *Asterisked sites are in English.

  • Hakui (羽咋市) - Small city in the middle of the Noto Peninsula. Train stations: JR | Photos | Official site
  • Hakusan (白山市) - Formed on Feb. 1, 2005 upon the merging of a city and several towns and villages. Located within Hakusan National Park. Train stations: JR | Photos | Official site

  • Kanazawa (金沢市) - Historical castle town, prefectural capital, and largest city in the Hokuriku region. Train stations: JR | Photos | Official site*

Municipal Mergers

On Feb. 29, 2004, Ishikawa had 8 cities (-shi; 市), 27 towns (-cho; 町), and 6 villages (-mura; 村). By March 31, 2006, this changed to 10 cities, 9 towns, and 0 villages. Heisei Municipal Mergers between April 1, 1999 and March 31, 2006 are as follows:
