As of March 31, 2006, Fukuoka has 27 cities (-shi; 市), 38 towns (-cho; 町), and 4 villages (-mura; 村).

Cities

The major cities are Fukuoka (capital), Dazaifu, Kitakyushu, and Kurume. *Asterisked sites are in English.

Towns and Villages

Towns (-machi; 町) and villages (-mura; 村) are grouped into non-administrative counties (-gun; 郡). *Asterisked sites are in English.

Municipal Mergers

On March 31, 2001, Fukuoka had 24 cities (-shi; 市), 65 towns (-machi; 町), and 8 villages (-mura; 村). By March 31, 2006, this changed to 27 cities, 38 towns, and 4 villages. Heisei Municipal Mergers between April 1, 1999 and March 31, 2006 are as follows:
