As of March 31, 2006, Chiba has 36 cities (-shi; 市), 17 towns (-cho; 町), and 3 villages (-mura; 村).

Cities

The major cities are Chiba city (capital), Funabashi, Ichikawa, Kamogawa, Matsudo, Narashino, Narita, Tateyama, and Urayasu. *Asterisked sites are in English.

Towns and Villages

Towns (machi; 町) and villages (-mura; 村) are grouped into non-administrative counties (-gun; 郡). *Asterisked sites are in English.

Municipal Mergers

On March 31, 2001, Chiba had 31 cities (-shi; 市), 44 towns (-machi; 町), and 5 villages (-mura; 村). By March 31, 2006, this changed to 36 cities, 17 towns, and 3 villages. Heisei Municipal Mergers between April 1, 1999 and March 31, 2006 are as follows:

  • April 1, 2001: Shiroi-machi town becomes the city of Shiroi.
  • April 1, 2001: Tomisato-machi town becomes the city of Tomisato.
  • June 6, 2003: Sekiyado-machi town in Higashi-Katsushika-gun merges into the city of Noda.
  • February 11, 2005: The city of Kamogawa is reborn by the merger of Amatsukominato-machi town in Awa-gun and the old city of Kamogawa.
  • March 28, 2005: The town of Shonan-machi in Higashi-Katsushika-gun merges into the city of Kashiwa. Higashi-katsushika-gun is thereby dissolved.
  • July 1, 2005: The city of Asahi is reborn upon the town of Hikata-machi in Katori-gun and the towns of Iioka-machi and Unakami-machi in Kaijo-gun merging with the city. Kaijo-gun is thereby dissolved.
  • December 5, 2005: The towns of Isumi-machi, Misaki-machi and Ohara-machi in Isumi-gun merged to form the new city of Isumi.
  • January 23, 2006: The city of Yokaichiba and the town of Nosaka-machi in Sosa-gun merged to form the new city of Sosa.
  • March 20, 2006: The municipalities of Tomiura-machi, Tomiyama-machi, Miyoshi-mura, Shirahama-machi, Chikura-machi, Maruyama-machi, and Wada-machi all in Awa-gun merge to form the new city of Minami-Boso.
  • March 27, 2006: The city of Sawara and the towns of Omigawa-machi, Yamada-machi and Kurimoto-machi in Katori-gun merge to form the new city of Katori.
  • March 27, 2006: The towns of Shimofusa-machi and Taiei-machi in Katori-gun merge into the city of Narita.
  • March 27, 2006: the towns of Sanbu-machi, Naruto-machi, Hasunuma-machi and Matsuo-machi in Sanbu-gun merge to form the new city of Sanmu.
