FAQ
- Which pro labs are the best?
In Tokyo, Horiuchi Color (which uses Kodak materials) and Pro Lab Create (which uses Fuji Film materials) are among the most patronized professional labs, especially in Tokyo. They have branches in other Japanese cities. See PhotoLabs in DirectoryZONE for addresses.
Anybody can use these pro labs, not only pro photographers. Processing time for color transparency film is usually about 2 hours. If you want your film or print to be processed to exact specifications, use a pro lab. Most of these labs also offer digital imaging services.
- How much does it cost and how long does it take to develop a roll of film in Japan?
These days, one-hour or faster color negative film processing is widely available. These places usually charge slightly higher than places which take overnight to process your film. Places which take overnight often have signs advertising 0 or 1 yen per print. However, this price applies only when you develop the film for the first time. And you still have to pay for developing the film which is usually 500-600 yen per roll. Regular-size reprints costs 0 to 30 yen.
Developing 35mm color slide film costs around 900 yen for unmounted strips of 6 frames in a sleeve. At a pro lab, slide film processing (unmounted) takes only 2-3 hours.
- What about other pro labs besides those listed in PhotoLabs?
Of course there are more pro labs than you see in the PhotoLabs listings.
The September issue of Commercial Photo magazine (published by Genkosha) has a pro lab supplement which lists the major pro labs across Japan.
- How do I communicate in Japanese at a pro lab or photofinisher?
See PhotoJapanese and PhotoWords. It teaches basic phrases and vocabulary that will come in handy when you deal with the lab or photofinisher. They include print sizes (5 x 7, 8 x 10, etc.).
