KANAMARU Shigene
KANAMARU Shigene 金丸 重嶺 (1900-1977)
Established Japan's first commercial (advertising) photo studio in 1926. While pursuing advertising photography, he sought to combine photography and design.
In 1936, he was dispatched by the Japan Newspaper Photography Association to cover the Berlin Olympic Games. He and NATORI Yonosuke became rival press photographers. His photographic genre covered both advertising and documentary photography. Also taught photography at Nihon Univ. and became a department head.
Served as the first chairman of the Japan Advertising Photographers' Association (APA) when it was started in 1958.
