As of March 31, 2006, Iwate has 13 cities (-shi; 市), 16 towns (-cho; 町), and 6 villages (-mura; 村).

Municipal Mergers

On Nov. 14, 2001, Iwate had 13 cities (-shi; 市), 30 towns (-machi; 町), and 16 villages (-mura; 村). By March 31, 2006, this changed to 13 cities, 16 towns, and 6 villages. Heisei Municipal Mergers between April 1, 1999 and March 31, 2006 are as follows:
