Aichi Prefecture (愛知県; Aichi-ken) is in the Chubu or Tokai region near the center of Honshu, Japan's largest island. It has Japan's 4th largest city in Nagoya, which is also the prefectural capital and the largest city in central Japan between the Kanto and Kansai regions. Nagoya is often the first stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line's Hikari and Nozomi trains from Tokyo.
It was also the host of the successful Aichi Expo held in 2005.
Municipalities
As of March 31, 2006, Aichi has 34 cities (-shi; 市), 27 towns (-cho; 町), and 3 villages (-mura; 村). Before the Heisei Municipal Mergers on Aug. 19, 2003, there were 31 cities, 47 towns, and 10 villages. Nagoya is Aichi's capital and also Japan's fourth largest city.
Aichi also has the following regions: Owari (Ichinomiya, Inuyama, Komaki, etc.), Nagoya, Chita (Handa, Tokai, Chita, etc.), Nishi Mikawa (Okazaki, Anjo, Toyota, etc.), Oku Mikawa (Shinshiro, etc.), and Higashi Mikawa (Toyohashi, Toyokawa, Gamagori, etc.).
