As of March 31, 2006, Hokkaido has 35 cities (-shi; 市), 130 towns (-machi; 町), and 15 villages (-mura; 村). It also has 14 districts or "subprefectures" called shicho (支庁) which have branch offices of the prefectural capital. Hokkaido is the prefecture with the most number of municipalities by far.
