As of March 31, 2006, Aichi has 34 cities (-shi; 市), 27 towns (-cho; 町), and 3 villages (-mura; 村). Before the Heisei Municipal Mergers on Aug. 19, 2003, there were 31 cities, 47 towns, and 10 villages. Nagoya is Aichi's capital and also Japan's fourth largest city.

Aichi also has the following regions: Owari (Ichinomiya, Inuyama, Komaki, etc.), Nagoya, Chita (Handa, Tokai, Chita, etc.), Nishi Mikawa (Okazaki, Anjo, Toyota, etc.), Oku Mikawa (Shinshiro, etc.), and Higashi Mikawa (Toyohashi, Toyokawa, Gamagori, etc.).

Cities

The major cities are Nagoya (capital), Toyohashi, Toyota, Gamagori, Inuyama, and Okazaki. *Asterisked sites are in English.

Towns and Villages

Towns (-cho; 町) and villages (-mura; 村) are grouped into non-administrative counties (-gun; 郡). *Asterisked sites are in English.

Municipal Mergers

On Aug. 19, 2003, Aichi had 31 cities (-shi; 市), 47 towns (-machi; 町), and 10 villages (-mura; 村). By March 31, 2006, this changed to 34 cities, 27 towns, and 3 villages. Heisei Municipal Mergers between April 1, 1999 and March 31, 2006 are as follows:
