As of March 31, 2006, Aichi has 34 cities (-shi; 市), 27 towns (-cho; 町), and 3 villages (-mura; 村). Before the Heisei Municipal Mergers on Aug. 19, 2003, there were 31 cities, 47 towns, and 10 villages. Nagoya is Aichi's capital and also Japan's fourth largest city.
Aichi also has the following regions: Owari (Ichinomiya, Inuyama, Komaki, etc.), Nagoya, Chita (Handa, Tokai, Chita, etc.), Nishi Mikawa (Okazaki, Anjo, Toyota, etc.), Oku Mikawa (Shinshiro, etc.), and Higashi Mikawa (Toyohashi, Toyokawa, Gamagori, etc.).
