SAUNDERS, William (18??-1893) UK. One of the early foreign photographers who came to Japan in the 19th century. Photographed the foreigners settlement and took portraits for customers. Also photographed Edo (Tokyo), Kamakura, and Kanazawa.

Based in China before visiting Japan from Aug. 25 to Nov. 12, 1862. Based in Yokohama.

In Oct., accompanied US envoy Robert Pruyn to Edo Castle and photographed the shogun's councilors.

Returned to Shanghai, China and operated a photo studio. He was most successful in China taking many pictures of China. Died in Shanghai.
