In Shiga Prefecture, Shin-kaisoku (新快速) or Special Rapid train is a JR (Japan Railways) train that stops only at the major JR train stations. It does not stop at the smaller train stations. When riding the Biwako Line between Nagahama and Kyoto or beyond, most people ride Shin-kaisoku trains.

However, if you want to get off at a train station where the Shin-kaisoku train does not stop, you will need to ride or transfer to a Futsu (Local) train which stops at every station on the train line.

On the JR Biwako Line, the Shin-kaisoku train does not stop at the following train stations: Zeze 膳所駅 | Seta 瀬田駅 | Ritto 栗東駅 | Shinohara 篠原駅 | Azuchi 安土駅 | Inae 稲枝駅 | Kawase 河瀬駅 | Minami-Hikone 南彦根駅.

On the JR Kosei Line, the Special Rapid train does not stop at Karasaki, Ogoto Onsen (Kaisoku Rapid trains stop here), Ono, Wani, Horai, Shiga, and Hira Stations. You must take the Futsu (Local) train.
