SAKAI Toshio 酒井 淑夫 (1942-1999.11.15) Tokyo. Japan's third Pulitzer Prize winner for a photo of a US soldier in Vietnam.

Education Graduated Meiji Univ. Politics and Economics dept. in 1965.

Career Worked part-time as a darkroom technician for UPI during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

After graduating from the university, entered UPI's Tokyo Bureau in 1965. Inspired by fellow UPI employee SAWADA Kyoichi who had won the Pulitzer Prize, Sakai also went to the Saigon Bureau in 1967.

His "Dreams of Better Times" photo of a weary US soldier asleep in the rain in Vietnam won the first Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography in 1968.

From 1973 to 1975 before the fall of Saigon, he was the chief photo editor for Southeast Asia for UPI.

Went freelance from 1977 to 1985 stringing for Newsweek, Time, etc.

Entered AFP Tokyo Bureau in 1986. Covered the Philippines overthrow, Tienanmen Square riots, etc. Left AFP in 1989 and established Woodstock Co., a video film planning firm, in 1994.
