MORIYAMA Mayumi

MORIYAMA Mayumi 森山 眞弓 (1927.11.7- ) Tokyo. President of JCII (Japan Camera and Optical Instruments Inspection and Testing Institute) which also operates the JCII Camera Museum, JCII Photo Salon, and JCII Library in Tokyo. She took over this position after the death in 1987 of her husband Moriyama Kinji who was the first president of JCII and a member of the Lower House of the Japanese Diet.

Mrs. Moriyama worked as a bureaucrat at the Labor Ministry and became Director-General of the Women and Young Workers' Bureau. She later was elected to the House of Councilors.

She became widely known upon her appointment as Chief Cabinet Secretary under Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu and later the Minister of Education in 1993 under Kiichi Miyazawa.

In the Oct. 1996 Lower House election, she successfully switched to the House of Representatives.

In April 2001, she was appointed as Justice minister under newly-elected Prime Minister Jun'ichiro Koizumi.

Her husband was a camera buff who went to New York in 1955 to establish the Japan Camera Center. (2001.5.1)
