Municipal Mergers

On Oct. 11, 2004, Kagoshima had 14 cities (-shi; 市), 73 towns (-cho; 町), and 9 villages (-mura; 村). By March 31, 2006, this changed to 17 cities, 28 towns, and 4 villages. Heisei Municipal Mergers between April 1, 1999 and March 31, 2006 are as follows:
