ICHIKI Shiro 市来 四郎 (1828-1903) Kagoshima. Member of the Satsuma Clan under Lord SHIMAZU Nariakira. Scholar of Dutch learning, mainly chemistry. Studied photography technology.

Best known for his 1857 daguerreotype portrait of Lord SHIMAZU Nariakira, the only known Japanese daguerreotype in existence and kept at the Shimazu family museum in Kagoshima. Also made photography equipment based on Dutch and English books on photography. (2000.12.15)
