Hiro (1930.11.3) Born as Wakabayashi Yasuhiro in Shanghai, China. High school education in China and Tokyo. Studied at the New School for Social Research, New York 1956-58. Married Elizabeth K. Clark in 1959.

Worked as an assistant to Rouben Samberg, New York 1954-55; Richard Avedon, New York 1954-57; and Alexey Brodovitch, New York 1958-60.

Established Hiro Studio, New York 1958. Freelance from 1958, mostly fashion. Harper's Bazaar staff photographer 1966-74. Hiro is probably more well known in America than in Japan. Work includes fashion, advertising, portraiture, still life, and landscape.

Awards: Gold Medal, Art Directors Club of New York 1968, Photographer of the Year Award, American Society of Magazine Photographers 1969; Newhouse Citation, Syracuse Univ. 1972, Society of Publication Designers Award 1979.
