As of March 31, 2006, Fukushima has 12 cities (-shi; 市), 33 towns (-machi; 町), and 16 villages (-mura; 村).

Municipal Mergers

On Oct. 31, 2004, Fukushima had 10 cities (-shi; 市), 52 towns (-machi; 町), and 28 villages (-mura; 村). By March 31, 2006, this changed to 12 cities, 33 towns, and 16 villages. Heisei Municipal Mergers between April 1, 1999 and March 31, 2006 are as follows:
