WIRGMAN, Charles (1821-1891) British national who lived in Yokohama as Felice Beato's partner. Also was the publisher of Japan Punch magazine.
First arrived in Japan in 1861 as a correspondent for the Illustrated London News. By 1863, he entered a partnership with Beato.
Wirgman may have been the one who suggested to Beato to have photos be hand-colored. Hand-colored photographs soon became popular. (2002.12.22)
