As of April 1, 2006, Akita has 13 cities (-shi; 市), 9 towns (-cho; 町), and 3 villages (-mura; 村).

Cities

The major cities are Akita city (capital), Odate, and Yokote. *Asterisked sites are in English.

Towns and Villages

Towns (-cho; 町) and villages (-mura; 村) are grouped into non-administrative counties (-gun; 郡). *Asterisked sites are in English.

Municipal Mergers

On March 31, 2001, Akita had 9 cities (-shi; 市), 50 towns (-machi; 町), and 10 villages (-mura; 村). By March 31, 2006, this changed to 13 cities, 9 towns, and 3 villages. Heisei Municipal Mergers between April 1, 1999 and March 31, 2006 are as follows:
