FUKUHARA Roso

FUKUHARA Roso 福原 路草 (1892-1946) Tokyo. Real name 信辰. Noted pictorialist photographer.

Fourth son of drugstore owner FUKUHARA Arinobu who founded a drugstore named Shiseido (forerunner of Shiseido Cosmetics Co.) Younger brother of FUKUHARA Shinzo, another noted pictorialist photographer.

Graduated Keio Univ. in 1911 majoring in French literature. While in junior high, learned haiku poetry and his older brother's interest in photography also rubbed off on him.

In 1922, visited Paris and London where he took pictures. His early photos were very similar to his brother's, but gradually he developed his own style in the graphical compositions. While brother Shinzo's photographs have a dreamy, pictorialist, and "old Japan" look, many of Roso's pictures have modern elements of the 1930s such as a utility pole, streetcar, or office building.

Although he was always in his older brother's shadow, he worked well with Shinzo and actually created work equal to or exceeding his brother's artistically. (2001.09.16)

１８９２年資生堂の創業者福原有信の四男として東京市京橋区銀座に生まれる（信辰）。

１９１７年慶応義塾大学文学部仏文科卒業。仏文科在学中は典型的な文学青年として村松梢風、水木京太らと交流し「人生を道草しながらゆく」という意を込めて「路草」と名乗り俳句をつくるなど美術よりむしろ文学に親しんだ。

３学年先輩だった久保田万太郎は学生時代の路草を「もっともよく読み、だれよりも深く思索した、寡黙、且、冷静な勉強家だった」と評している。

１９２１年兄信三らとともに冩眞藝術社を結成。熱心な同人となり『冩眞藝術』誌上に精力的に作品を発表した。１９２２年アメリカおよび、パリ、ロンドン、に旅行。１９２４年日本冩眞会の結成に参加。ここでも多くの作品を発表すると共に、『日本冩眞会々報』に同人の作品批評、写真論などを執筆している。

１９３５年第一回「福原路草冩眞展」を資生堂ギャラリ?にて開催。以後、同ギャラリ?において１９３９年までに３回の個展を開催した。

路草は兄・信三の影響を受けつつも、対象を幾何学的な感覚で捉え明快に構成するという、近代感覚あふれた作風により独自の世界を築き上げた。また、兄・信三の相談相手として１９４１年資生堂取締役副会長に名を連ねたが、職に縛られることなく、芸術を愛好する趣味人として生涯を送った。

１９４６年日本冩眞会再建総会の議長をつとめ、副会長に就任。同年９月２９日疎開先の長野県豊科にて逝去、享年５４歳。
