In April 2010, I went to see what the fuss was about. I can see Tokyo Skytree from my window at home in eastern Tokyo, so naturally I got very curious about this thing which seemed to have sprouted from nowhere.
xy201-20100408_7760.jpg
Tokyo Skytree is near Oshiage Station in Sumida Ward which is next to Asakusa.
xy202-20100408_7681.jpg
As soon as you get out of Oshiage Station, you can see it towering above. Already it draws many tourists to the area gawking and photographing it.
xy203-20100408_7685.jpg
Top of Tokyo Skytree so far. That's 338 meters into the air, already taller than the old Tokyo Tower's 333 meters by April 2010 when these photos were taken.

People gawking at Tokyo Skytree. It's best to see it on a sunny day with the blue sky in the background. Even at 338 meters high, it is already looking something awesome.
xy205-20100408_7757.jpg
When the tower opens to the public in spring 2012, it will no doubt become a major tourist attraction. The sleepy neighborhood of Oshiage will transform into one of Tokyo's hottest spots.

Bridge with gawkers. The name "Skytree" has also caught very easily. Easy to remember and sounds attractive. It was the most popular name voted by the public.
xy207-20100408_7696.jpg
It won't be just a tower for broadcasting. It will also have lookout decks and a shopping/hotel/restaurant complex adjoining it.
xy208-20100408_7702.jpg
The base has three legs shaped like a triangle. One side of this triangle is about 70 meters wide.

Nikken Sekkei (日建設計) which designed Tokyo Skytree, also designed many other famous towers in Japan such as Tokyo Tower, Sapporo TV Tower, Nagoya TV Tower, and Kobe Port Tower. No doubt, the Tokyo Sky Tree will be their greatest creation.

Tokyo Skytree. Just wait till it reaches its full height of 634 meters and become Japan's tallest structure. It's gonna be more than awesome.
xy212-20100408_7698.jpg
Though triangular at the base, the shape gradually becomes cylindrical as it goes up. Very beautiful design.

xy215-20100408_7688.jpg
One thing though, when it snows, it may form clumps on these steel beams. When the snow melts, is it gonna fall to earth, possible hitting someone? Snow falling from the tower was observed this past winter when it snowed in Tokyo.
xy216-20100408_7695.jpg
Current height: 338 meters (as of April 2010).

I hope it has a large elevator because huge crowds will be visiting this tower.
xy220-20100408_7741.jpg
Near the Skytree is this small Info Plaza where you watch a short video about the tower and panel displays.

Meanwhile, the old Tokyo Tower will lose broadcast customers and see a great drop in income.
