Maiko in Her Room
A private moment. This maiko is lying down in her kimono reading a comic book after getting tired of playing cards. Her mama-san probably would not be pleased to see her wrinkle the kimono like that. Not sure if this was staged or a candid shot. It's hard for anyone to lie down like that in a kimono.

This particular photograph is one of my all time favourites. It has such an "off guard" feel to it, and so very personal. It shows the maiko as a real human.

I love this photo, and I can't work out if it's staged ether. I'd imagine the girl would have taken ages to get down there and comfortable though! Aren't the kimono supposed to be rather tight around the middle?!

I guess everyone must take a break from time to time, even if it's from pleasuring someone :) Very beautiful photo.

I'm curious as to who took this photo. This looks like a professionally taken photo, and from the several books I've read, the okiya was an almost sacred ground... men (ie: a professional photographer in Japan would have been male) weren't allowed on premises except for the men who dressed them and tied their obi, and then men who did their hair - a manservant occasionally to carry geisha-gear, such as a samishan.

i doubt that geisha or maiko were often seen as human in society. so yes, it is nice to see one looking like a normal teenager instead of a china doll.

Umm irished that was pretty funny, but rude. Though I agree sometimes I think that "geiko" and "maiko" are like ummm faeries in the world of the "floating willow world" in which they make us feel good about ourselves, and forget they are actually human. Geisha are soo gracefull and properly mannered and beautiful I forget they are just normal people behind the painted smile, but you have to remember geisha are certainly not faeries of somekind, so makesure you dont push any in a cliff to see if would they fly. Reality dude, okeh dont think of fantaseh all the time.

why is everyone so angry? This picture is no different than seeing a movie star candid picture, again, we are reminded that those held in higher regard are again just people...

the picture is quite stunning although i do believe that the correct term for mother is "okasan".
