Although “Akita” literally means Autumn Rice Paddies, this meaning is generally not recognized as the original since the current kanji characters are actually ateji<\/em> characters selected for phonetic purposes and don’t have significant meaning related to the locality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In central Akita city, Takashimizu Park (\u9ad8\u6e05\u6c34\u516c\u5712) was the site of Akita Castle built in the 8th century. It is thought to be the area where land was elevated. Today, very little remains of Akita Castle, but an east gate and earthen wall have been reconstructed.
