The classic-looking hairstyle you see on geisha in Kyoto, etc., is usually called Shimada-ryu. Why is it called “Shimada-ryu?” One leading theory says that it originated in Shimada, Shizuoka Prefecture. Based on this assumption, they hold the annual Shimada Mage (topknot) Matsuri in mid-September in Shimada. A group of local beauticians don their real hair (or sometimes a wig) in the Shimada-ryu style and dance at a few locations in central Shimada.I went to see it and here’s the video:
