UCHIDA Kuichi 内田 九一 (1843-1875) Nagasaki. Major figure in early Japanese photography. One of the originators of "Yokohama Shashin" tourist photos.

Apprenticed under UENO Hikoma. Opened portrait studios in Osaka, Yokohama, and Tokyo.

A highly skilled photographer, became known as "the best photographer in Tokyo."

Was the first to photograph Emperor and Empress Meiji in 1872 and again in 1873. Sold landscape photos of Japan.
