Central Yanai has a beautiful street of traditional buildings having traditional white walls (shirakabe). The area is officially preserved as a traditional townscape (重要伝統的建造物群保存地区).

Yanai's white-walled street has a long history going back to the Muromachi Period (1337-1573). It used to be a merchant quarter. The street is about 200 meters long.
