Carving daikon (old photo). These men were really good at carving the daikon.

I went to the Kanamara Festival twice. This picture was taken the first time I went in the 1980s, when the festival was still mostly a local event with much fewer people. These carved daikon look much more artistic (realistic) than the ones I saw in 2006.
